TDLR Information – Barbering & Cosmetology

(Applies to all barbering and cosmetology license types, including barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians, manicurists, and specialty licenses such as eyelash extension and wig specialists)

These continuing education requirements apply to all license types regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Continuing Education Requirements

📅 NOTICE (Effective September 1, 2025)
For licenses expiring on or after 09/01/2025, the following CE requirements apply:

Standard Renewal (4 Hours Total)

You must complete 4 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education every 2 years, including:

1 hour – Sanitation
1 hour – Human Trafficking Awareness
2 hours – Approved Electives
- Topics listed in TDLR Rule §83.202
- Sanitation required under the law and rules
- The Texas Barbering and Cosmetology law and rules
- Mental health awareness

15+ Year License Holders (Reduced Requirement)

If you have held your license for 15 years or more, you only need:

1 hour – Sanitation
1 hour – Human Trafficking Awareness

The additional 2 hours are waived.

Multiple License Holders

CE hours apply across all barbering/cosmetology licenses
If all licenses are not at 15 years, full 4 hours is still required

❗️IMPORTANT: 1 CE hour = 50 minutes of instruction
You may not receive credit for the same course more than once within the same renewal period (You may retake it in a future cycle).
